The Sebaceous Cyst

So I was in the clinic on Tuesday like I am every week and this women came in to have "a boil" on her back checked. It had popped up earlier in the week and she went to the emergency room to have it treated. It was infected and they incised it and packed it to treat it. When the doctor I was with looked at it he realized it was a sebaceous cyst, which form from the lining of a hair follicle and fills with a really stinky white fluid. It wasn't treated previously like a sebaceous cyst, and in order for it not to come back, the doctor decided he needed to make sure the entire capsule was removed from the wound, so he took some tweezers and put them through the incision that was already there (it hadn't closed yet) and he started pulling out pieces of the cyst capsule. I watched him the whole time. "This is kind of gross", I thought. But having a strong stomach, it didn't bother me. But the longer I watched, the more nauseous I started to feel. And it got to the point where I had to leave the room and went into the bathroom and retched (though nothing came up). I was actually quite embarrassed. I've seen some gross things (organs being removed, scalps being pulled up over the face) and this stupid little cyst make me almost throw up. But I like to blame it on the fact that my stomach was empty, cause I want to be a surgeon and apparently that kind of thing is the whole first year. It'll never happen again.

Beach Pics

Here are some more pics so you can get off my back (Kristin)

here are some pictures of the beach at hunting island which is about a half hour from where I live. I only went there once, but it was really nice, not really any waves, but the water is warm. You can actually feel warm streams of water shoot past you (like someone is peeing). Its also weird that one the other side of the water is pine trees and palm trees.

Here is a lighthouse at the beach

They actually had to warn people when I got in the water.

Here is where they filmed the Vietnam scene in Forrest Gump. These are the trees on the beach.

Here's a house just down the street from me. I think its cool.

Done with first year, Starting second year

Well i finished my first year of medical school. Overall it was pretty great. It got better and better as the year went on and i had a lot of fun, got in a few fights (just one really and not much of a fight at that), made some friends, lost some friends, did some rectal and pelvic exams (just one of each), had a lot of dental work done, lost some weight (won a wii for it), gained a lot of it back (at least it feels like it), scored some goals (well only 5 and 3 came in one game), made out with tons of people (not really) and learned a lot (most of which i've probably forgotten in the last 6 weeks).
At the beginning of the year we were randomly placed in small groups (10 or 11 people) and we met 2 or three times a week for a few hours. I got lucky and was put in a good group and we all got along and worked together well and had fun together (other groups fought). Then when they changed these small groups later in the year, it just wasn't the same. We all missed the old group and didn't really see as much of each other anymore. And no we're kind of reliving that because the whole class has been scattered across the country (in groups of 8-10) which kind of sucks, so i want pay tribute to some of the friends i made this first year.

Josh B. the studying machine
Vanessa and Nancy
Jackie and Kristi
This is a few of that small group i talked about earlier
A blurry Josh and Nick. Even though Nick is not a big fan of mine anymore, i still think he's one of the greatest guys i know.

Even More Alaska Pics

I can't believe I never put this picture up. It is probably my favorite picture I took in Alaska. It's at a harbor just outside of Juneau (I can't remember what its called)

Sunday, May 18, 2008

I 've been playing a lot of soccer the last six months with my buddy Nick. I love it, even though I suck. On Friday, with about a minute left in the game I had the chance to score the game winning goal and I missed it and now I can't let it go. But it has helped me to lose 25 lbs.
I went to a SOSA (Student Osteopathic Surgical Association) conference in Ft. Lauderdale in April with a couple of buddies of mine from school (Josh - back and Nick - front). They both want to go into surgery (neurosurgery and orthopedics), and now i'm thinking I might too (general).

So during our spring break last month, I decided not to shave for the whole week and this was all I could come up with. Pathetic.

More pics from Alaska

This is the "world's longest zipline". I did go down it, and it was pretty scary. They say its a mile long.
