Even More Tracy Arm Pics

This glacier was the day cruise destination. This is as close as we could get because big chunks of the glacier would break of and fall into the water. Plus the ice was pretty thick at this point.
It was really cold this day (and it was in July)
All those block dots on the ice are seals

This is one of my favorites. It was really cold and rainy so we had to spend a lot of the time on the inside of the boat (the trip lasted from 9am-6pm and i was completely soaked by 11am - because i preferred being outside). That's my brother jesse with the hat and robby, who i worked with is behined him. that's an iceberg outside the window.

Sorry it's been so long, since i put up any pics, but i have a lot more you should see. These are from a day cruise i went on to Tracy Arm Fjord.

Quicksand

So I once saw on Mythbusters that they busted the myth about quicksand, but I'm not so sure. By one of the glaciers in Juneau there's a big flat space carved out by the glacier that is just rocks and sand and a river flows through it trickling off all across the flat area. Near the middle of this flat area (which you can kind of see in some of the other pictures) there was a thick area of trees. I decided I wanted to go into the trees, but as I approached the trees, the sand became softer and softer until I eventually sunk knee deep into the sand. It didn't matter how hard I tried, I could not pull my leg out. Someone else tried to help pull me out, but my leg would have broken had he kept pulling. There was so much pressure on my leg under the sand that the only way I was able to get out was by digging my leg out. It was actually quite hilarious, but made me think you could get trapped in quicksand.

A nice view of Herbert Glacier
It is a 45 minute bike ride (about a 2 1/2 hour hike - i did both) through the forest to get to the glacier.

Downtown Juneau

It turned really green after the snow melted

Mendenhall Glacier (notice the people in front of it to get
an idea of the scale of the glacier) - the view from this spot
is one of the most amazing things i've ever seen.

Alaska

Near where I used to live in Juneau
